On the Southern part of Vättern lake, just a stone’s throw away from Jönköping, lies the island, Visingsö. Many tourists are drawn to the charming nature of the island with incredible views of the lake and lush greenery of fields and forests. Intriguing history offers an adventure through time, as visitors delve into the island’s past.
According to the legend, the island was born when a giant named Vist threw a piece of soil in Vättern lake, so his wife could step on it while crossing the lake. To commemorate his gesture there is a wooden sculpture of Vist, the giant in Huskvarna.
Although this is a questionable part of the island’s story, there are many interesting facts from its history. The island was the residence of the Swedish monarchy between the 12th and 13th centuries, during which time 4 Swedish kings died on Visingsö. Later, the island became home to the influential Brahe family.
A trip to Visingsö
As soon as the good weather arrives, visiting the island is an amazing plan for any day. The opportunities vary from walking around, biking, and even petting alpacas.
To get to the island you can take bus number 121 or 122 from the city center and go to Gränna Hamn. The ferry departs from there once an hour and takes 25 minutes to arrive at Visingsö. A return ticket costs 70 SEK, which you can buy at the port office or online. Upon setting foot on the island there are places to rent a bike for the day for 175 SEK, which makes it easier to get around on the island and adds extra fun to the adventure.
Historical elements are still found all over Visingsö, including many churches, cemeteries, and museums. Even though the island ones had two magnificent castles, all that remains is the ruins. The Visingsborg castle, which was built by the Brahe family, can be found right next to the port, while Näs castle, the former residence of Swedish kings, is situated on the southern part of the island. Marking the two ends of Visingsö there are two lighthouses. Despite their modest height, they provide a nice view of the lake. You might even spot the monster that is believed to live in Vättern lake. Nostalgi museet is situated in the middle of the island and offers a unique experience for its visitors since it looks like an abandoned gas station and stores.
The island is full of nature. There are many parts covered with oak trees and fields with vibrant green grass and wildflowers. Many farms are situated on the island so on your tour you will most likely (among others) meet with cows, horses, and chickens. In the middle of the island there is an alpaca farm, where visitors can pet the alpacas or simply admire the cute creatures. In case you get hungry while on the island, do not fear, there is a store and some restaurants and cafés to choose from. During sunset, I advise you to go to the southern part of the island since it gives an amazing view of the lake turning to pinkish colors.
If you are already in Gränna on your way to the island it is worth stopping in town and visiting the candy stores that Gränna is famous for. In good weather, a hot air balloon is in the air that visitors can go on, providing a nice view of the lake, island, and the town itself. On the way to Gränna, you can stop at Röttle waterfall and enjoy nature as well as the view of the iconic Swedish red houses.
So grab your friends and head to the island to create a memorable adventure!
