Upcycle: Turning the Old into Gold
January is the month for self-improvement. As the month comes to an end the New Year’s resolutions are still intact and humanity’s cycle of renewal is still on a roll. You look at your wardrobe, longing for a change, but at what cost? Put down your bank-card and walk out of the store; Here are some tips on how to upcycle your clothes that you already own and to commit to a sustainable New Year’s resolution.
Do not have a sewing machine, no worries, these tips are fully possible to do by hand. If you still prefer machines, there is a sewing group in Jönköping you can join, all you have to do is show up with your project and you are good to go.
1. Change/Add buttons to a garment.
Buttons are the sown in accessories of our clothing, changing them from a, for instance, neutral colour to a shiny gold will give your garment a new look. Buy them second-hand or switch them with some from another garment.
2. Grab a pair of scissors and cut.
A new crop top? Maybe a short sleeve instead of a long sleeve? Or why not shorts instead of full-length jeans? The possibilities are endless, and this is a sure way to completely change the design of your clothing. Additionally, sew a hem on the edge of the cut to get a cleaner edge and to prevent the fabric from threading in the washing machine.
3. Adjust the fit.
Got a shirt that would be perfect if it was a little bit tighter or a pair of pants that just do not sit right? Why not fix them to be tailored just for you? Whilst you can go to a tailor it is also fully possible to do it yourself at home.
4. Let nothing go to waste.
Use the scraps to create fun accessories, a headband, a scrunchie, a new bag, or even add the scraps to a jacket for an artistic touch. Let your creativity set the limit.
