Each spring, Jönköping University celebrates the achievements of its graduating students through a series of formal ceremonies that mark both the end of their studies and the beginning of exciting new chapters. Rather than holding one single event, each of the university’s four schools hosts its own graduation ceremony on different dates and at various distinguished venues across the city of Jönköping, creating a vibrant and week-long celebration.
The festivities begin on the 28th of May, when the School of Engineering holds its graduation ceremony — the first of the season. The following week, on the 5th of June, both the School of Health and Welfare and the School of Education and Communication celebrate their graduates in parallel ceremonies. Finally, on the 6th of June, the spotlight turns to the Jönköping International Business School, whose students gather for their own ceremony to mark the culmination of their academic journey.
The ceremonies feature inspiring speeches from university leaders, faculty, and distinguished guests, the formal presentation of diplomas, live musical performances, and reflections on the shared experiences that have shaped the graduating classes.
A much-loved tradition across all ceremonies is the presentation of graduation scarves, each in a distinct color representing its respective school. These scarves are more than just symbolic accessories — they are powerful emblems of belonging, identity, and academic accomplishment. Draped proudly around graduates’ shoulders, the scarves provide a visual reminder of the friendships, challenges, and triumphs experienced throughout their studies. Many students treasure these scarves long after graduation as a keepsake of their time at Jönköping University.
Though the ceremonies take place at different venues across the city rather than on the university’s central campus, they share a unifying spirit of joy, pride, and optimism. Families and friends gather to applaud the graduates, cameras flash to capture once-in-a-lifetime moments, and a festive atmosphere fills the air. As each ceremony draws to a close, confetti often rains down, students exchange embraces and congratulations, and a deep sense of accomplishment and camaraderie lingers.
For many, it is a day of mixed emotions — nostalgia for the years gone by, excitement for the journey ahead, and gratitude for the friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
