An autumn weekend in Jönköping
With the Höstmarknad this weekend, autumn has officially begun in Jönköping. Cozy autumn vibes arrived in Jönköping together with some live music, a flea market, and a (very surprising) camel in the middle of the city. Right now, you may be slightly scared of the cold days and early evenings that are upon us, but the key to enjoying autumn is making it cozy. Let’s go over some ways to make the best of an autumn weekend in Jönköping.
The autumn market was this weekend, but don’t worry if you missed it because there is a market at Västra torget every Saturday. This is the perfect way to start the weekend and maybe even buy some fresh vegetables. However, if you want to use your weekend to wind down after a busy week, you might get more out of a walk along the beach than strolling through a busy market. Luckily you can do both in Jönköping. Put on a warm sweater and a scarf and you’re ready to walk around with the last rays of sunshine on your face while breathing in the crisp autumn air and enjoying the amazing view over Lake Vattern.
Everyone in Sweden knows there is nothing is cozier than fika, which will taste even better after spending some time outside. A cozy café, a hot drink to warm up your hands and a cinnamon bun shared with some friends are all you need after walking around outside.
Of course, it’s great to spend a sunny autumn day with a clear sky outside, definitely if it ends with a beautiful sunset, but we won’t be able to escape the rain for much longer. Luckily, there also are lots of things to do inside this autumn.
If you feel like enjoying some culture, you can visit the Lans museum (which is free!) or the matchstick museum. This might even inspire you to organize a crafternoon with your friends. Pinterest is filled with fun DIY projects you can do to make the most of the day while it’s pouring rain outside.
Another very fun thing to do is going to see an ice hockey game. Our team might not be doing very well, but going to the arena and cheering on the team together with your friends and all of the other fans is a great experience. You may not know a lot about ice hockey if you’re not from Sweden, but it is a part of the Swedish culture you have to experience at least once. Don’t forget that even though you may be safe from the rain inside the arena, you will be cold if you’re not wearing warm enough clothes.
The last thing that cannot be missing from an autumn weekend is a cozy night in. There aren’t a lot of things more perfect when it’s dark and cold outside than lighting some candles, wrapping yourself in a blanket, and watching a feel-good movie with a cup of tea and a good snack.
I hope the people who have been longing for autumn since the summer started are happy it’s here, but even more I hope that those who prefer the hot summer nights now feel a little bit more ready for the days to get shorter and the trees to lose all their leaves.
