Fössta Tossdan i Mass – First Thursday in March
Today is officially the unofficial national day of Småland. You may believe that it goes back centuries, but it actually originated in 2010. It was all thanks to a Facebook post and an aunt from Småland.
The warm accent we have in Småland often jumps over the “r” sound in words where the r comes before an “s”. The aunt had no exception to this rule; Every year, she was asked by her colleagues “What date is it tomorrow?” and she would always answer “Fössta mass! (Fisst of mass [first of march])”. Her family also found it amusing and it soon turned into an inside joke.
Fast forward to 2010; Her nephew posted a picture on Facebook of a Swedish princess cake in combination with the phrase “Fössta tossdan i mass (Fisst Thussday in Mass [First Thursday in March])” as a homage to his aunt. The post became viral and started an online appreciation for Småland and especially the accent known for the region.
Funnily enough, the princess cake in the picture did not go unnoticed, and of course, became a valued part of the celebration. It is now 15 years later and all of Sweden eats princess cake on the first Thursday of March. If you want to join in, and personally I do not see why you wouldn’t, here is a recipe for princess cake in a glass; Fast, easy and most importantly delicious.
Princess Cake in a Glass – Simple, non-baker friendly Version
This recipe uses ready made store bought ingredients with the intention of being super easy and quick. If you want to take on the challenge, be fearless and make it from scratch, if not this is a recipe for you.
Ingredients (4 servings):
4 slices of sponge cake (sockerkaka)
2 dl vanilla custard
2 dl whipped cream
1 dl raspberry jam
Green marzipan for decoration
Instructions:
1, Place one slice of sponge cake at the bottom of each glass.
2, Spread a thin layer of raspberry jam over the cake.
3, Evenly distribute the vanilla custard on top of the jam.
4, Add another slice of sponge cake as a “lid.”
5, Whip the cream and spread or pipe it on top.
6, Decorate with a small piece of green marzipan and a pink marzipan rose for the classic Princess Cake look.
