How To Survive Winter
Winter is coming, and it is bringing chaos with it. If you are struggling to navigate the Swedish winter, some of these tips may help.
Skin as dry as your humour?
My dry friend, it is time to invest in a moisturizer. Whilst a lighter moisturizer is excellent in the summer heat, the cold winter breeze (storms in Jönköpings case) will make you dryer and require a bit more help. Why not try a cream moisturizer with an oil base?
It is a common misconception that oily skin needs less moisture. However, if you are scared of the oil clogging your pores, opt for something without it. In general, a cream is more moisturizing than a gel and there are plenty of options.
And do not forget your lips, nobody likes a dry and flaky kiss.
Layers, layers and more layers
Ever wonder how people on the street are in long coats in the middle of winter? It is all in the layers. Whilst there is an abundance of wool underlays to buy, a simple long-sleeved shirt that you have at home will do. Maybe a tank top and some tights under your outfit as well and you are ready to go.
Vitamins
3 minutes pass and then the lecture hall is filled with a choir of coughs. It is 90% inevitable to become sick this time of year, so let us make you part of the lasting 10%. A vitamin D supplement is almost a must when living in Scandinavia, it will, amongst other things, help with your energy levels and mood.
As students, we naturally repel anything containing antioxidants, with the sole exception of the grapes used to make wine. Remember the saying ”One apple a day, keeps the doctor away.”? It does bring up a valuable point, as good as apples are, any fruit will be beneficial to you. Mix it with your yoghurt, keep it in your bag as a snack, mix it in a smoothie or any other way that you prefer. Your immune system and your skin will thank you.
New Hobbies
Even though winter may be one of, if not the, cosiest season of the year, activities outside may not be as tempting anymore. Why not try a new hobby to light up your day? It is self-care at its finest as you do something you enjoy and learn something new in the process.
Start painting, pick up a sport or even better, why not check out some of the activities at JU? Grab a friend and join Showtime in their jam sessions, start reading with the book club, or learn a new language at the language café. You get to try something new and meet new people.
