It’s officially Winter! And if you’re an international student like me, then you’ve probably noticed by now that Swedish Winters are not all fluffy snow, enchanting fairy lights and Christmas markets. But you’re an EDIT fan, so now you know how to deal with the darkness and the cold, while also staying healthy and glowing, right?
Then, how about a few suggestions and tips to get you in the right cozy vibes this upcoming season?

If you’re not a big fan of movies, or you ran out of what to watch during the cold season, the best alternative is probably picking up a book and warming up in a nice blanket, ready to dive into some great writing. Well, lucky for you I have just the right recommendations to keep you fascinated. There are no better classics that just simply scream ‘Winter’ than “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy and “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. But if you are more of a contemporary books fan, then you’ll just have to trust me on this one: “Before the Coffee Gets Cold” by Toshikazu Kawaguchi and “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” by Ottessa Moshfegh. A touch of fantasy, some thought provoking words, these books just proved to be such great Winter reads! If you’re more into thrillers and you already watched “The Shining” during the spooky season, maybe try reading it now! Or stick to some Christmas classics like “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens.

The laptop will be your best friend this December. Well, yes, exam season is upon us, but there is always time for a good movie in between study sessions! So, picture this: You want to feel the snowy atmosphere without having to actually go outside, but maybe keep it light, maybe even wake up some nostalgic feelings: “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”, “Happy Feet” and “The Polar Express”; or perhaps you want something a bit more action-packed, dramatic: “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and “Eight Below”; maybe more romantic and sweet? “Love Actually” and “The Holiday”. And I bet most of us are already feeling the Christmas fever, so how about setting the mood early by rewatching the classic “Home Alone” series or “Elf” and “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”.

But no perfect day is actually perfect without some snacks and drinks to keep you going! And I think we can all agree there’s nothing quite as ‘winter-ish’ as a mug of hot chocolate, filled with marshmallows and with a splash of whipped cream on top! But if that’s too sweet for you, maybe dial it down with some special Christmas mix tea! This will for sure warm up your heart and fill your home with a pleasant smell. Speaking of, probably nothing will beat the scent of freshly peeled oranges in Winter. Plus, they are a great source of Vitamin C, much needed during this period when your immunity system is going through a tough fight! And, if you are braver and wish to step up your baking game, (this is a personal favourite of mine) you must try it at least once in your life: apple pie, topped with vanilla sauce and cinnamon! Or quite literally, gingerbread flavoured anything! Maybe even challenge your friends to a gingerbread house competition! And lastly, if you come across it, you have to get yourself a nice cup of Glögg!

Well, this has been fun! But only indoor activities? There is definitely so much more to look forward to this month! There are plenty of ski slopes and ice rinks around Jönköping, just perfect for a more adventurous day! And with Christmas approaching fast, you can’t leave your place undecorated! A short trip to Ikea or around the city centre is certain to transform your home and give it that holiday ‘spark’ that was missing! And maybe while you’re at it buy some Christmas presents to remind your loved ones just how much you care! Or get crafty, open Pinterest and let your inner artist shine! Remember,it’s not about how expensive it is! There’s nothing as touching as a handmade gift, or as rewarding as some custom-built decorations!
So …what would your perfect Winter day look like?
