Summer’s Best Getaways
School is almost over and there are only three days left until we can officially announce Summer! Sure feels exciting… being done with exams, another productive year checked off on your list, a well deserved break, reuniting with friends and family. Everything seems perfect, right? Well, maybe except the weird weather. If you are like me, then it’s probably affected you as well – never knowing if you should pull up your sunglasses or umbrella next. But, however frustrating it is, there is no reason to worry because
“There are a hundred and four days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it
So the annual problem for our generation
Is finding a good way to spend it”
And although my plans are definitely not as exciting as Phineas and Ferb’s, I have the perfect list of getaways to inspire you for some sunny and affordable trips this summer!
1. Lake Como, Italy
You probably heard that ongoing joke that the moment you turn 20 there will always be someone you know visiting Tokyo or Italy. Well, I think it’s your turn to be that person! And to make sure you’re saving some money, I suggest you try Lake Como! It does not only have an insanely beautiful landscape and is surrounded by charming towns and villages, but it is also a lot cheaper to find accommodation compared to bigger cities and you still get to experience the full Italian Summer experience. And if you feel adventurous, you can always take the regional train to Milan! However, beware of when you decide to schedule it! Visiting from mid July until the beginning of August might just cost you some hours waiting in long queues!
2. Lisbon, Portugal
If you want peak Europe on a budget, then you must add Lisbon to your list. It is considerably cheaper than other European capitals and there is no compromise on vibes. It is full of panoramic views and colorful streets, and it might just be perfect for enjoyable walks and taking Instagrammable photos. There is also plenty of history to discover tasty foods to try. And if you are in a party mood, the night life and student life in Lisbon is simply a must! Speaking about festivities, if you visit during June you will be caught in the famous Santos Populares street parties, but be careful in July and August because IT.WILL.BE.HOT!
3. Prague, Czech Republic
I will continue with European capitals, but will switch up the atmosphere a bit. Maybe you’re looking for something less hot and Mediterranean. In that case, you have to try Prague! It is the perfect location for a fun, accessible and fairytale-like citybreak this summer! Breathtaking architecture, from gothic churches to colorful houses, easy to explore by foot and cheap beer! I mean, seriously, what more could you wish for? The nightlife and social scene of the city are legendary, while also being safe! Combined with some hearty traditional food, Prague really is a student’s dream vacation spot!
4. Interlaken, Switzerland
So far, we’ve explored some scenic, coastal or historical locations. But what about those who want something more nature-oriented or are more interested in a cool adventure? Well, Interlaken is a small resort town in the mountains, in central Switzerland, perfect for adventure sports lovers, stunning views and fresh-air summer vibes. And you might say, but Switzerland is so expensive… Although it is quite pricey, Interlaken has plenty of student-friendly options, such as affordable hostels, travel passes to cut transportation costs and supermarkets with cheap food! Moreover, activities like hiking, swimming in Lake Thun or organizing picnics are free of charge! So if you can, you must take this opportunity to see beautiful natural landscapes, waterfalls and visit alpine villages and recharge from the hustle and bustle of big cities!
