Roaring engines, the smell of fuel, and fast cars – does that sound like something you’d enjoy? If you’re interested in motorsport, Formula 1, or dreaming of a future career in the automotive industry, there’s exciting news: a Formula Student association is coming to Jönköping University!
I had the chance to interview Garner Ghering, team principal and one of the six founders of JU Formula Student. But what exactly is JU Formula Student? We’re talking about a team currently in the process of becoming a student association, which aims to build their own race car and take part in international competitions.

What was the inspiration for this project?
When speaking to Garner Ghering, one thing becomes clear: JU Formula Student is driven by genuine passion. Garner has been involved in the motorsport industry since he was a child. His dad played a significant role in Cadillac’s marketing and inspired his son early on. When he came to JU and noticed that there was no association for racing yet, he saw the opportunity and took the initiative to found one.
Who should join JU Formula Student?
JU Formula Student is for anyone with an interest in motorsport, Formula 1 or even a future career in this field.
You can choose how involved you want to be in the team – whether you want to help build the race car, work in the marketing or engineering part or simply socialize with others who share the same interests. In addition to building the car, JU Formula Student plans to organize a wide range of events. From Formula 1 watch parties and trivia nights to sponsor talks and visits to real races. Their next event is a karting day on February 28th, 2026, where participants can spend the day racing on track. If you are interested, be sure to sign up before the 21st of February!

Why should you join?
With this team you will gain real, hands-on experience, as the goal is to build a fully functioning race car. JU Formula Student will work together closely with JTH, and the engineering part will play a big role.
Another big part will also be the business / marketing side. If you join and want to support the team in this field, you will learn to understand the hierarchy and dynamics of how a smaller-scale race team can operate.
With roles ranging from finance, marketing to technical operations and logistics, the team offers a wide variety of opportunities. The hands-on mentality is the main point, together with the team you will work on a real race car, not just learn about the theory behind everything.
You don’t need technical experience or work on the car to join the team. If you simply love motorsport, Formula 1, fast cars and everything that has to do with it, JUFS is the perfect match!
Looking ahead!
By the summer of 2027, JU Formula Student is planning on having the car finished and being ready to go to competitions. The main target for now is Formula Student UK, where the races are going to take place on the famous Silverstone circuit!
Are you interested?
Do you feel your fingers tickling? Do you want to work together with a passionate team to build a race car or just spend time with people, who love motorsport just as much as you do? Then join JU Formula Student! Any events or news will be posted on their website and on their Instagram!
